Rocketwar!

It is difficult to tell how and when the “Rocket War”-tradition started in Vrontados. Today there are many different versions of the story. We will tell you two of them. The first version says that it has its origins in the 19th century, when the Ottoman occupiers confiscated the cannons of the locals because they feared that they would be used in a rebellion. So the residents of Vrontados had the idea of using rockets instead. This became the traditional annual Rocket War. The second story states that this tradition was born during the turkish occupation. People from the island […]

Get used to the Greek timetable

Don’t worry if your bus is not as punctual as you might wish, the bus will show up! But if you plan to go a little further than only around the city, please check at the bus station in the port of Chios City if there is actually a bus coming at the day you want (especially in winter the weekend is sadly not that well connected but during the working days you should not have a problem!). Later it was destroyed two times – the first time by the Turks in 1822, and […]

One of the most romantic spots on Chios Island!

Fresh air is playing with your hair. Under you are thousands of lights like a carpet of different coloured diamonds. At the horizon there are even more lights glowing in the dark, parted from the ones underneath you by the black sea which makes the tiny lights of the fishing boats jump up and down. The flickering lights at the horizon seem to be continued by the stars without any noticeable boarder where the land ends and the stars start. You think I just quoted some kind of traveling novel? Nope, I am speaking about nothing less than the breathtaking […]

Kourounia

The village of Kourounia consists of four settlements (mahalades) and lies just behind the village of Egrigoros and about eighteen kilometers away from Volissos.   The region is famous for the production of a local wine called kourouniotiko, which is said to come from the well-known ‘Ariousian’ wine of the antiquity. It embraces Kourounia and the mountainsides surrounding. Lately, the local authorities have made some efforts to revive the production of this wine variety to produce the 21st century ‘Ariousian wine’. The cultural tradition of the region is also pretty important – prove for that are the items of the noteworthy ecclesiastical museum, […]

Kardamyla

The borough of Karadamyla is built on the site of ancient Kardamilis, 28 kilometers from the city of Chios. Giving around 2000 inhabitants a home the town is divided into two settlements. The houses have a deep traditional architecture: Narrow streets, curbstone alleys and covered passages are typical Greek features. The same accounts for the houses mainly built with stone and decorated with flowers and plants. The upper and older section is surrounding the steep hill, the lower village called Marmaro is located on the coast covered by a beautiful bay and around 2 kilometers  away from the old settlement. It has […]
