Chios is a place with a great culture and people are keeping, taking care of and spreading it. The Homerion Cultural Center of Chios Municipality is one of the places where you can watch it happening.
This place is a wonderful cultural center situated in the capital of Chios Island. Because of a generous donation to the Municipality by Michael and Stamatia Xylas in December 1985 the building of this special center could be realized. The center became a legal entity in 1989 and offers a big amount of cultural shows, exhibitions, theatre plays, workshops and lessons since then. It is a multipurpose building with five floors consisting of an auditorium with 462 seats, conference hall with 172 seats, a board room, teaching and rehearsal rooms, a refreshment room, a library and exhibition galleries, which supports artistic and scientific trends. It is a place where cultural topics and artistic and scientific trends are taught by specialists of the subject in music lessons, theater, photography, Jewelry, Bookbinding, painting, mosaic art as well as traditional dances and music. The aim of the center is the recognition and support of artistic and scientific trends that broaden the sensibility and the knowledge of the public and, at the same time, encourage it to seek quality in life. Also the promotion of the cultural education and the scientific coordination between Chios and other cities is one big goal, too. During the 1980 – 1995 period, 3.000 events took place in the Centre – film screenings, lectures, theatrical performances, conferences, paintings, and photography exhibitions, teaching courses, concerts and dancing performances.
The services and the facilities of the centre are available to the associations of the whole country for any cultural event of non profiteering purpose.
Since the beginning of 1989 various artistic workshops are operating in some of the Centre’s facilities, where specialists are teaching Painting, , Theatre, Photography, Mosaic Art and Icons painting.
