Mavra Volia, also known as Mavros Gyalos, is unique and one of the most beautiful beaches on the island and definitely a magic place! It is located south-west, about 30 km away from the city of Chios and is near Emporios village. Because of the present volcano Psaronas’ eruption millions of years ago the stones of the beach are covered and colored black, as it is unprecedented anywhere else. This beach is the sum of three small beaches, each in its small bay. Thus, the peculiarity of the black, rounded, shiny pebbles, the steep rock that imposingly stands above the beach as well as the crystal clear water are the features that make this area more than suitable for summer vacations. The water is crystal-clear, deep and usually cold and its color is deep blue because of the color of the pebbles. Swimming in Mavra Volia is an experience not to be missed!

The small port of Emporios is next to Mavra Volia. You can find cafes, tavernas but also some rooms to let there. The road leading to the seaside resort of Emporios is a little before the entrance to the medieval village of Pyrgi.

Emporios is a picturesque small port, which has become famous because of the nearby seasides of Mavra Volia. At a short distance from the port, there are three successive bays with deep dark blue waters. Right behind us there are abrupt high hills.

Another reason to visit the area is the archaeological site that was recently opened to the public. The Acropolis and Neolithic settlement of the 6th and 7th century B.C. has been open to the public after the completion of the excavations and research conducted by the Ministry of Culture. Climbing the Acropolis is worth the effort, as on reaching the top you are rewarded with a magnificent view. The Acropolis is also accessible to people with disabilities.
