Volissos – One of the biggest villages of the island!

The beautiful village Volissos is definitely a place you have to visit when your once on our beautiful island Chios. It is located in the north western part of the island. Volissos is one of the biggest villages here and can be found 40 km away from the capital Chios and is situated about 1,5 km away from the seaside and its port.

The village offers amazing views from the entrance to the mountain with the old Byzantine castle. The castle has a trapezoid shape with six circular towers and the village is built in amphitheatrical style on a hill. There is also a small port which connects the island of Chios with the neighboring island Psara. It is claimed to be the birthplace of the famous poet Homer. According to the famous historian Herodotus, in one of his chapters refers that Homer lived and wrote his marvelous epics in this village.

Of course, you will also find rooms to let, minimarkets, a traditional bakery, some nice traditional cafeterias, taverns, a butchery, one small museum and two big squares where each one has its own church.

In the surrounding area you can find several beaches with beach bars which are opened in summer time, some restaurants and also some apartments to let.
