Agios Georgios Sikousis is located on a hill, about 15 kilometers southwest from Chios City and has many interesting things to visit.
Just take an extended walk through the village and you will for sure pass by the beautiful a Byzantine church of Agios Georgios Sikousis, which was once the chapel (katholikon) of the monastery built before the Nea Moni. This monastery was supposed to look like the famous Nea Moni, but after some centuries only the chapel and the gate remained. If you walk a little further you will also be able to enjoy an amazing view over the island of Chios!
Another thing that might be interesting to see is the big boulder in the middle of a street in an area of the village that is called “Patimasia” which means “the Footstep”.
To this footstep you can find an interesting story:
“Saint George was seen many times during the night on his horse going in and out of the church and throwing rays of light everywhere. He was going around the village and very often passing by the Northwest part of the village. There exists a large boulder and it has on it the mark from shoe of his horse. They tried to remove the boulder but they were unable to do so. That area is called “the footstep” (patimasia) of Saint George.”
(G. Tsoflias, Agios Georgios Sikousis)
Anyway, this little beautiful village is another eye-catcher on
Chios Island which you should not miss.
